    biography
emily hopkins was desperate for a girl. not that she didn't love her four sons, of course, who were all lovely and fabulous in their own special ways. but mudpies and grass-stained knees weren't exactly what she dreamed of as a little girl when planning out her fairy tale wedding and eventual happily ever after. she wanted a quiet, sweet little girl just like herself, who liked pretty dresses and fairy tales and making cupcakes too adorable to eat, and who loved and trusted her enough to know she could tell her absolutely anything, the way emily never had her own no-nonsense mother. she wanted her daughter to be her best friend. kind of like gilmore girls, without all that unseemly premarital sex and fast-talking.

given emily's obvious and overwhelming glee at finally getting the daughter of her dreams, it was no surprise that little mallory was spoiled from the get-go. she was given everything she wanted, and plenty she didn't. nothing was too dear for emily's little angel. so maybe that's why it took her so long to realize that mallory was no little angel at all. not that she was rosemary's baby's second coming either. she wasn't evil, she wasn't bad, she wasn't even particularly mean. but she also had zero interest in sitting still and staying pretty while her brothers got to have all the fun. sure, frilly dresses were nice to look at, but what was the point of keeping one on all day if it was just going to make you too paranoid about getting dirty to do a single thing? mallory was easily bored and highly energetic, a combination that not only ruined many a frilly dress but also frequently landed her in trouble with her teachers, her neighbors, and her father, though her mother still staunchly refused to give up on her dream. she still spoiled mallory mercilessly, buying her video games and comic books alongside light-up disney princess tiaras in order to stay on her good side, and talking her out of trouble with everyone. she wasn't bad, emily insisted, just... playful.

and even those teachers, neighbors, and fathers had to admit, mallory was hard to stay mad at for long. partly, it was because they knew she was just a kid and didn't mean to be bad. partly, it was because she was just damn charming. after all, she was the product of generations of selective breeding, and had all the charisma of her waspy politician ancestors on her side. she wasn't sweet, but she was friendly, and as she got older, she learned how to command attention and bring parties to life. which was a good thing, because she also learned to love parties to an extreme. she loved letting loose and having fun, and loved those moments when everyone could live the way she did, if only for a while. she liked being liked, even if she wasn't always willing to work too hard at it. and as she got older, she thrived on being wanted.

she knew she was blessed with a charmed life, and that she should have been grateful. and to an extent, she really was. but mallory was also getting bored by how easy everything was. what was more, she was getting frustrated by how easy everyone assumed everything was for her. why would she have to work for anything in her life? well, maybe because she wanted to. just as people resented her for going to private school, she resented them right back for assuming she bought her way in when she was perfectly intelligent on her own, thank you very much. rejecting all the feminine ideals that her old-fashioned family pushed on her wasn't enough anymore. mallory decided to challenge herself by setting major life goals to achieve, figuring out what she wanted to do and going for it. anyone who saw mallory on the soccer field knew she had a fierce competitive streak, and anyone who talked to her more than five minutes knew she was immovably stubborn on top of that. and when, after a particularly childish argument with her brother in which she threatened to move to the moon to get away from him and he made a remark about how she didn't have the grades for astronautics, she decided to prove him wrong and become an astronaut. everyone thought it was a joke, and maybe that's how it started off. but mallory had always had a passion for science, even when her grades didn't necessarily reflect it. science was just plain cool. and getting more into studying it got her more into the subject in general. even math became fun. and when she got accepted to the henry samueli school of engineering and applied science, she literally rubbed the letter in her brother's face. he pushed her off and made fun of her for taking his words so seriously, but he was proud, she could tell.

she may now be more academically diligent than she ever has been in her life, but personality-wise, mallory still hasn't changed much from that party girl in high school. once she leaves her textbooks behind, she's still outgoing and friendly and prefers laid-back fun times for all over drama-filled shenanigans. she's still not sweet and considers nothing and no one above merciless teasing or pranking, but doesn't set out to cause any lasting damage, physical or emotional. and of course, she's still spoiled beyond belief, but who says you can't have it all? work hard, play harder. it's the only way to get your full dose of living out of life.
